In cleaning down the surface of 1:4 two new features
were revealed (Fig. 15). 1:4 F1 was located in the east
baulk near the southeast corner of the unit (between
Jars 01020130 and 01020131) adjacent to the broken sandstone disc. The circular feature,
probably representing a pit, was visible due to a differentiation
in soil texture (fine gravel). Four bronze
bells (cat. 467), a bronze bangle (cat. 473) and a clay
bead (cat. 468), were recovered from the context of
this feature.
The other feature in this spit, 1:4 F2, was also on the
east baulk near the northeast corner of the unit and
comprised three pieces of limestone protruding from
the baulk. The soil in this area was of a slightly different
colour (5YR 4/4) to the surrounding matrix and
within the feature ceramic sherds were found (cat.
469). The soil is only very slightly different from the
surrounding matrix. In F2, beneath a fist-sized piece of
limestone, some poorly preserved bone was encountered
and some earthenware ceramic sherds (cat. 486).
There appeared to be another feature contained within
1:4 F2 and this was labelled as 1:4 F3.
