The colour of the
matrix on the surface of Unit 1 is 10R 4/3 weak red.
The first 10 cm of matrix was removed and no features
were encountered aside from those mentioned
above (the large sandstone disc and some smaller
boulders along the south baulk, 1:1 Features 2 and
3). Five, coarse, quartz-tempered, ceramic sherds
were recovered from the sieve during the excavation
of spit 1 (cat. 300). The soil colour in 1:1 was
slightly different to the surface being recorded as 10
R 4/4 weak red with more clay content.
