After removing a further 10 cm of matrix in Unit 4 the
surface of 1:5 was exposed in which
two small circular features were apparent, labelled as
1:5 F1 and 1:5 F2. 1:5 F1 was a darker soil with flecks of
charcoal (cat. 483) and earthenware sherds (cat. 485).
As the feature was excavated, a thin layer of lighter
coloured gravel was encountered. The feature was 25
cm in depth but no other material culture was encountered.
1:5 F2 was a circular feature of mottled red clay in
which four pieces of earthenware ceramic were found After the removal of 1:5, there was a notable change in
the soil colour across Unit 4 and the matrix became
more clayey and the layer number was changed.
